POPCORN PICTURES - in development
52 x 11’ Animation
For boys and girls aged 7 - 11
Polly and Ziggy are film fanatic siblings, who make movies in their studio, "Popcorn Pictures", in the tinsel town of Pollywood. Popcorn Pictures follows their ongoing creative conflicts against a backdrop of creative chaos in a surreal studio, a bizarre town and a mad multi-verse.
Polly (11), is the director: a lover of the golden age of cinema when things were “done properly”. She is an archetypal completer , running production with help from her countless crew of sprockets, controlled telepathically via her deely-bopper antennae. She looks and sounds like a perfect organized sweet kid but can be tough. Occasionally her façade cracks, often reminding everyone (especially her brother) to “Stick to the script!”
Ziggy (9) is a free-form creative, whose outward façade of detachment is betrayed by the gleeful snakes on his head. He is a guru of filming, editing and visual effects. Armed with his amazing but unpredictable “edit-o-tron 1000”, he is a gadget-boy who claims hi-tech is the only way to go despite a guilty pleasure for west end musicals. He tries to add explosive special effects and elaborate choreographed sequences to everything. He thrives making things up on the fly, and is often heard saying “How about…” - sometimes just to annoy his sister.
Polly and Ziggy make movies with help and hinderence from: Milo(no!), their destructive little brother with special monkey onesie powers; Octet, the multi-instrumentalist octopus; Spinning Jenny, the vegan spider costumier and make-up artist; an sfx lab run by Anana, the amnesiac ex-shamen and her pet dragon; Zip, the pessimistic, monosyllabic stunt-man, swapped at the waist with his estranged brother, choreographer and instant flashmob creator Zap.
Pollywood is filled to the brim with divas, hams, choreographers and dancers, waiters, journalists, impresarios, publicists, detectives, organised crime - in fact everything one might find in a an average multi-species multi-verse town.
Conflict is never far away. Between the crew, the inhabitants of Pollywood, the inevitable misunderstandings between witches and vegan spiders, Polly and Ziggy fight like cat and dog. Ziggy could play at making movies for ever and never finish a thing. Polly is never content until the job is done. Ziggy knows exactly which buttons to push to get a reaction.
Every episode is another instalment of creative chaos. Despite their inbuilt differences and their inept friends, Polly and Ziggy always come together in the end to deliver a new scene, a new movie, a new stunt. It is mostly about disaster prevention, but Milano is always happy. Popcorn Pictures is a sitcom but you might also think of it as a docu-soap peeking behind the cameras of the world’s most chaotic film studio.
